   The Terrier Tattler
October 2008

Hello fans and friends -

I love Fall and it's finally descended here in Chicagoland!  Unfortunately, I've been unable to enjoy it to it's fullest!  As I feared in last month's newsletter, I had TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery on my right knee.  It's the same surgery I had on my left knee last summer so at least I know what I'm up against here.  I'm feeling just fine now - it's been 4 weeks since the surgery.  But that's the tough part.  I don't get to run or jump or even walk up stairs for 6 weeks.  Uggh.  I've been spending way too much time in a crate or on a leash.  But I'll get to start rehab with my friends at Integrative Pet Care next week - so at least I'll have that to look forward to!

Hope your Fall and Halloween is a Happy one!  Be sure to enter my costume contest - details are below!  Wes and I love seeing all the funny costumes you guys come up with!                                                                                                                                         Bianca

Rescue Me?

My friend Skippy has had many 'rescue' dogs come stay in his house on their way to their new homes.  His mom Shell has found many a lucky Cairn Terrier a new, happy home to spend their lives.  Shell is a very active volunteer in CRUSA (Cairn Rescue USA), an organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing Cairn Terriers.  Sometimes they are pups whose owners can no longer care for them, sometimes they're pups that are rescued from a 'puppy mill'.  The places and circumstances that make up the pups' history can be very sad and heart-breaking.  I've thought of doing an article on puppy mills, but honestly the concept has been more than I can bear, so I've avoided it.

Well, recently Shell called Tracy and asked if we were planning a trip to Iowa.  It just so happened that Tracy and Wesley were going to Iowa to visit family that very weekend.  You see, Shell had rescued a pregnant Westie (Angelina) for the Westie Rescue of Missouri.   She had picked up the Westie in Wisconsin, along with some Cairn Terriers.  The pups were all at a vet in St. Charles (near where we live here in Chicago), but Angelina needed to end up in Kansas City, Missouri.  Well, since Tracy and Wes were heading toward Iowa, they offered to give Angelina a ride from St. Charles, IL to Iowa City, IL.

So, Angelina came to spend that Friday night with me and my brother Wesley.  Since I'm still recovering from my knee surgery, I'm not allowed much activity and didn't get to play with Angelina.  But Wesley and Angelina got along really well.  She was really a pretty sweet kid.  She especially loved Tracy's lap and pretty much insisted sleeping in the same room with Tracy and Wes the night she stayed with us.  The next morning, Angelina and Wesley loaded into Tracy's car and headed west to Iowa.  In Iowa City, Iowa, Kris from the Westie Rescue group met Tracy and Wes in Iowa and took Angelina to her next home in Kansas City.  She'll be safe and warm there.  It will be a wonderful place for her to have her puppies and give them a great start.

Angelina told Wes some stories about her short life (she's only three).  She's had some sad adventures.  I've been really lucky to have such a fun, safe, happy home.

Gosha

Tracy always gets to go to a fun place called work most days.  She meets all kinds of interesting people and many of them have dogs.  Why the other day she met a nice man named that has a Westie!  The man, Vlad, is from Russia originally so he named his Westie Gosha, which is Russian from George (what a cool name, huh?!).

Look how cute Gosha is, and you won't believe it but he is 14 years old!  And you can tell from the flowers in his hair, he's got a great sense of humor too!  Wow - I hope I'm in such great shape when I'm 14!

The Girls from Brazil

It's been a while since we've heard from the girls from Brazil.  I was happy to get a recent photo from Nina of all the girls after one of their recent 'spa' treatments!

What I want for Xmas

Many of you know my FAVORITE pastime is fetching tennis balls.  I will chase a ball and bring it back it you for another throw until I can't ran any longer (which rarely happens).  Well, the little dachshund in this video, Jerry, has a great device - check it out.  I don't know what this contraption is called but it's at the top of my Christmas list!

AX for Bella!

Bella Riccelli earned her AKC Agility Excellent Title with a FIRST PLACE at the St. Joe Valley Agility Club agility trial.  Bella now moves up to the AKC Excellent 'B' class where she will be in tough competition and begin earning points toward her next title.  She and Michelle are doing great - especially for a gal that's not yet 3 (that's Bella I'm referring too - Michelle is well over 3!).  Congratulations!

Home is Where the Heart Is?

One of my friends emailed some very fancy dog houses.  Much more impressive than the traditional fido abode most of my buddies have!  Check these out!
